Embodied Connections: Figurative Ceramics and Cultural Narratives
In Spring 2024, the Embodied Connections residency introduced figurative ceramic sculptor Cristina Córdova, a native of Puerto Rico, to the UW-Whitewater community. Through a studio course and exhibition, she engaged Art & Design students in an exploration of figurative ceramics and cultural narratives, examining how artists express identity, heritage, and community through their work.
Throughout the course, students engaged in hands-on ceramic techniques focused on the human figure while reflecting on their own personal stories and inspirations. Weekly virtual gatherings provided opportunities to discuss how figurative sculpture has been used throughout history to challenge or uphold traditions. These discussions were complemented by in-depth technical demonstrations and constructive critiques, guiding students in creating ceramic pieces that were both meaningful and authentic.
The course culminated in an immersive 2 week in-person experience, during which students worked closely with Cristina to refine their individual and collective pieces for the exhibition at the Crossman Gallery and receiving in-person demonstrations. A particularly exciting aspect of this collaboration was the creation of a large-scale wall piece featuring a series of forms capturing somatic imprints, an expression of emotional frequencies in response to a narrative shared by Córdova. Alongside this group project, students also developed individual works—personal explorations of identity and place—resulting in a final exhibition that reflected both shared experiences and distinct artistic voices.
Running from February to March 2024, the Embodied Connections exhibition showcased Cristina’s work alongside student sculptures, all exploring themes of figurative art and human connection. Through workshops, discussions, and public events, students had the rare opportunity to learn directly from Cristina, leaving a lasting impact on their artistic journeys and on the UW-Whitewater creative community.Links:
